If you are planning to get a frenchie, then you have possibly wondered if there is a reason as to why you should not get a French bulldog. Of course, there are also many reasons as to why you should get one. For instance, French Bulldogs are cute, handy, and easy to groom, which makes them a favorite for many who can afford them.
People love them so much that their popularity soared from between 2013 and 2017, pushing them from 11th position 4th position on the American Kennel Club registrations.
Is that a good thing? Well, not really.
Here are 10 reasons not to buy a French bulldog.
1. Adopt One – Do Not Buy
A frenchie that is up for adoption needs you more than one that breeders have put up for sale. Adopting one will also discourage breeders from breeding Frenchies for profit only.
2. You Enjoy Your Freedom
If you are going to get a frenchie, then you should be ready to share your time with them. A frenchie does not like being alone. They will want to be with virtually everywhere. That includes when you go to bed, when having your meal, or even when you go to take a bath.
3. You will Spend More on Their Health
French bulldogs, especially the rare ones such as blue frenchies, have many health problems. Therefore, you should be ready to make more visits to the vet, and spend more on their health.
4. You are not Patient
Frenchies need you to be patient, in order to teach them how to live and be respectable. They can be stubborn sometimes, and will ignore your instructions. To overcome that, you must teach them you are the “pack leader.”
5. Frenchies are Front Heavy
Since frenchies are bred for their appearance, their weight is not naturally balanced. Their head is heavier than the mid and rear section of their body. Therefore, you must train yourself to support their head, when carrying them with your hands.
If you do not do that, they may rollover and possibly fall from your arms.
6. They Are Not Guard Dogs
French Bulldogs cannot guard your property. So if you are hoping to use them as guard dogs, be aware they are not guard dogs, and you cannot train them to do it either. Furthermore, they like sleeping a lot, so they will not provide a watchful eye while you are asleep.
7. They Cannot Swim
Frenchies cannot swim, thanks to their unique physical characteristics. They can stay afloat for a few seconds, but they will eventually sink and drown. So if you get one, be extra careful if you have a swimming pool. It will only take them a few seconds to drown.
8. Do Not Get a French Bulldog – No Puppies
Frenchies cannot reproduce naturally, and after they get pregnant, they need to deliver through C-section. That is because of the small stature, and tiny hips. The only way to get puppies will be with the help of a vet or breeder. Overall, breeding a frenchie is both expensive and risky.
9. Blue Is Not Good
The blue color is rare among frenchies, which might make you want to get a blue French Bulldog. Unfortunately, the blue color comes from a bad gene that causes serious health problems.
10. Breathing Problems
Frenchies suffer from multiple health conditions such as difficulty in breathing. Breeders are selectively breeding frenchies to death, especially those with really short but cute snorts.
As you will come to discover, most frencies die early from extreme weight loss that is caused by suffocation. Their breathing difficulties get worse as they grow older, and the only way to help them is through an expensive surgery.
Conclusion – Are French Bulldogs Dangerous?
Frenchies are not dangerous, in fact they are friendly and great pets. However, getting them for their looks alone puts their breed at risk, as breeders go for looks over the frenchies’ well being.
We recommend that you only adopt frenchies with rare characteristics instead of buying, to discourage unethical breeding of French Bulldogs.
