There are many ways to discipline a French bulldog. The specific disciplining method will depend on the lesson you are trying to teach your Frenchie. In this article, you will discover discipline strategies that can address barking, begging, biting, chewing, and rough playing.
Barking
A dog can bark for many reasons, and one of them is to draw your attention to a particular problem he has encountered. They can also bark to warn you that they are not happy with what you are doing, or about to do. Frenchies can also bark when they want to intimidate other dogs.
If they are barking to draw your attention to something, then that is okay. Check out why they are barking and address the problem. However, if they are barking at a visitor, then crate them. That will tell your frenchie that whomever they were barking at is welcome to your home.
If your frenchie is barking at other dogs, then you need to let them know you are in control/dominant. You can do that by giving the leash a slight but firm jerk toward you, then relaxing it a bit. Furthermore, you should be calm yourself while doing so.
Dogs can “smell fear,” thanks to the fright chemical our bodies release. Being calm, and talking with a happy tone, will calm them down, while the slight jerk at the leash informs them to follow you, as the pack leader.
Other times, a frenchie can bark so that you can take them out to relieve themselves. If that is the case, it is okay, and you should take them outside. Overall, learning why they are barking is the first step in disciplining them.
Discipline a French Bulldog not to Beg
You can teach your frenchie not to beg for food, by ignoring them when they beg for food. Giving them food, when they beg it tells them, it is okay to beg, and that is how they should get their food.
However, you should feed them on time, to avoid causing them unnecessary hunger pains. That can happen when they smell food that you are eating, of when it is cooking. Overall, a well-fed dog will learn not to beg, fast.
Chewing
It is okay for your adult frenchie to chew its toys, but not other household items. Dogs often chew on something when they are teething, or when they are anxious. However, there are times when they do it for fun. If they are doing it for fun, then you can train them to chew their toys only.
The way to train a frenchie, or other dogs to stop chewing shoes, clothes, or other fabrics, is to put them in a crate, when you spot them doing it. Furthermore, you should place a chewing toy in their crate. That will train them to chew on their toys.
Discipline a French Bulldog not to Rough Play
Rough playing can lead to body injuries on one or both dogs. The easiest way to discipline rough playing frenchies is to crate them. The moment they start rough playing, you must separate them, and immediately place the aggressor in a crate.
You can then raise your voice when scolding them, while they are still in the crate. Let them stay in the crate for about three hours, or sleep there until it is late at night. However, you must not place the dog that was not rough playing in the crate.
My French Bulldog Puppy Keeps Biting Me
Untrained frenchies may bite you, your children, or even visitors. They can do it when they feel offended, or when they feel they are intruders. If your frenchie is biting, then you put them in a crate outdoors, or in another room.
That will teach them that you do not approve of biting. Crating and isolating them immediately after a bite, tells them biting is not allowed in your living space. The isolation should last for up to three hours, or the whole night.
However, you must make sure they are comfortable and warm in their crate, during the entire isolation period.
Conclusion – How Do You Discipline a French Bulldog
A frenchie that has not learned to live with other dogs, or people, is a danger to others, and itself. Training them through crating, brief isolation, and scolding them as you isolate them, will train them to be sociable.
We hope that you found this guide to be informative, and you will start disciplining your frenchie, instead of giving up on them.
