Do French Bulldogs Get Jealous? – Discover Why

Last updated on June 19, 2020

Do French Bulldogs get jealous? Well, yes, they can get jealous, if they perceive that you are giving other pets, or even humans, more attention at their expense. If you have been spending time with your frenchie, then you have possibly noticed that by now.

In this article, we are going to share the findings of a study, which confirmed jealousy also exists among frenchies and other dogs.

According to UC San Diego psychology professor Christine Harris and former honors student Caroline Prouvost, jealousy in dogs is an emotional reaction they use to protect social bonds, which they perceive to be of great benefit.

What was interesting was that the experiment found that dogs did not show jealousy, when they knew or confirmed, that the object receiving their human owner’s attention, was not alive. That research proves that jealousy has more to do with survival.

French Bulldog Fighting Because of Jealousy

Overall, jealousy among French bulldogs, other dogs, and even humans, is not just a raw desire to be the center of attention. It comes about from a desire to be protected and loved.

Among French bulldogs, jealousy can lead to fighting or general aggressiveness. You will know they are being aggressive, if they start to bark or growl.

Fights are their way of forcing their perceived rival, to abandon whatever they consider as their physical space, property, or social circle.

Managing Jealousy in Frenchies

The best way to train French bulldogs not to be jealous, is letting them know they must share you with others, while they are still young. If such training is not an option for you, then you have to get an adult frenchie. So how do you know your Frenchie is being jealous?

A jealous frenchie will bark or growl, when they notice you are patting or carrying another pet, or even a baby. Furthermore, both males and female frenchies can show jealous behavior. In fact, a female French bulldog can even be more jealous than a male frenchie.

French Bulldog Acting Aggressive

Frenchie can be small, clownish, and fun pets, but they can be aggressive. Their aggressive tendencies will be most evident, when they are feeding or jealous. Training them to share “you,” while still young can help to stop them from acting overly aggressive.

Another alternative is to feed them from your hand, giving them their meal bite by bite. That trains them to respect you as their provider, and they must obey you. However, that will not teach them to be less aggressive to other humans, or even pets.

To teach them to be friendly to other member of the family, you must force them to share space, while they are still young. If you decide to buy adult frenchies instead, then get the ones socialized to live with other pets or dogs.

Conclusion – Do French Bulldogs Get Jealous

Frenchies can be as jealous as other animals, if they feel they are getting ignored. That can happen if you pet, cuddle, or play with other pets, while ignoring them. They can also be jealousy when you give your visitors more attention, and ignore them. Having them sit on your lap or carrying them can be a quick way to calm them down.
