Do Frenchies Sleep a Lot? Discover French Bulldog Sleeping Secrets

Last updated on June 8, 2020

Yes french bulldogs do sleep a lot, especially when they are a few months old, or when they are old. During those early and late stages of their life, frenchies will sleep between 18 and 20 hours a day. And when they are in their prime of their life, they will sleep 14 to 16 hours each day. That is more than half a day, even for a healthy and strong french bulldog.

Why Frenchies Sleep for Long Hours

The elderly and puppy French bulldogs, however, can sleep for up to 20 hours a day. Inadequate sleep will affect your French bulldog’s health, attitude, and temperament as they grow older. In that regard, always provide them with a quiet and peaceful environment to rest.

The older French bulldogs need a lot more sleep because they don’t move as much anymore. On average, a French bulldog will spend half the day sleeping, and only 20% of the day active. Well, the 30% usually doesn’t count because they are in a sort of trance.

During this period, they will sleep with their eyes open and rolled upward. The rolling of the eyes upwards is a defense mechanism. It allows them to get a better view of their surroundings, immediately they awaken. However, if you notice fast and rapid eye movements, then you should take it to a vet for checkup.

However, should you notice that your Frenchie is sleeping way too much and showing signs of illness, then you need to see a vet immediately.
